A positive link between Potassium-rich and bicarbonate-rich foods indices of bone health
10 million Americans have Osteoporosis with 17.9 billion spent per year in the US and 13.9 billion in Europe. Health-related benefits of a high intake of potassium-rich and bicarbonate-rich (veggies and fruit) on disease prevention have been gaining attention.
A positive link between Potassium-rich and bicarbonate-rich foods indices of bone health. Studies have shown specific associations between nutrients found in abundance in fruits and veggies and both axial and peripheral bone mass and markers of bone resorption. Women in the lowest quartile of intake for Potassium, Magnesium, fiber, vitamin C, Beta-Carotene had significantly lower lumbar spine and femoral neck Bone Mineral Density (BMD).
Another study women with low intakes of those same nutrients were found to have lower forearm bone mass and higher bone resorption. Studies from APOSSI (Aberdeen Prospective Osteoporosis Screening Study) has shown consistent longitudinal beneficial effect of fruit and veggies nutrients on bone loss in premenopausal women.
Also if fruit intake raised from 3.6-9.5 daily servings decreased urinary calcium excretion from 157 to 110 mg/d. Higher fruit and vegetable diet reduced the "Acid Load" compared to the control diet and conserved calcium for bone retention. This diet reduced bone fragmentation by 8-10% and bone resorption by 16-18%. A recent Swiss study suggests a strong beneficial effect of alkali supplementation in osteopenic women.
Disturbing Info About Splenda
Okay so in my researching throughout the day I found out a few things. Splenda, which I have known is bad for you for a while has just gotten more infamous on my list.
Most people do because they've tried the White Processed/Bleached Stevia Powders and didn't like the bitter aftertaste. The truth is here that Splenda is a sugar derivative. Basically they take sugar and add three Chlorine anions(Cl-) to sugar to make it different. No big deal right?
Wrong! Apparently Splenda, when ingested is broken down into Formaldehyde. If this sounds familiar that's because it was used for a very long time in preserving objects such as internal organs for future study. (I'm sure most people remember dissecting a frog or cat, up until recently they used formaldehyde) The FDA says Splenda is still okay, however there have been many studies where the lab mice produced cancer, the male mice became infertile and the female mice had more miscarriages and pregnancy problems.
What I've also found is that for every tiny packet you use (in which you think there are 0 Calories) there are actually 4 Cal. There is a loophole somewhere that says if there are less than 10 Cal per ounce(or something like that) that they can claim 0 Calories! That's horrible!
Anyways, I had never known how Splenda was made, but now that I know I'm definitely against it!
Look the whole point of this is...the less processed your food and sweeteners are the better for you they're going to be! The less chemicals used on your foods the better!
Make sure you read the ingredients on the box of Stevia or sweetener you buy, you might be surprised! If you're looking for an alternative sweetener and want to try Stevia, make sure the powder you buy is GREEN! If it's not green it's been chemically processed!
Stevia Recipes - Decendent Desserts
So it's a new year and I know people around the world are making resolutions about losing weight or eating healthier. Most of us have, at one point or another made a resolution about getting fit, losing weight, or eating healthier. If you haven't cut out those nasty fake sugars such as Splenda or other sugar substitutes, that is a good way to keep your resolution.
You might ask 'How will I live without my sweets every now and then?' You don't need those over processed sweeteners. Nature has provided us with a plant called Stevia. Stevia is a natural sweetener, meaning from the moment you pick a leaf off the plant it's sweet!
Stevia powders are becoming more and more popular, but not many people understand what it is or how to use it. Let me answer a few questions I've gotten recently. Stevia is naturally 10x sweeter than sugar.
If you're looking for a ratio 1 Teaspoon of Suede Hills Green Stevia Powder = approx. 1 cup of sugar. So the next time you look at the price tag remember that!
Stevia is in fact a 0 calorie sweetener, and can be baked with. Here are a few Stevia recipes that are delicious and will help you keep the weight off! Stevia is diabetic and hypoglycemic safe. Stevia has even been shown to help prevent plaque!

Health Tips for the New Year - 2013
From our personal experience, Phil and I believe that good health is #1, the top of the list, primo, and without good health nothing much seems to matter. So this month we decided to share with you a few ways that we have been able to improve our health year over year.
If we can do it, so can you!
Food With Benefits!!
Phil and I live by the motto K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Sweetheart). People are always asking us what we do to stay healthy. We believe it has to be simple in order to be sustainable.
The answer has been two fold,
"Get Alkaline = Get Well"
"Phil's Ultimate Breakfast with a Schmunkie"
Since Phil's Ultimate Breakfast with a Schmunkie has now become internationally famous (Northern Ireland, Switzerland, Tasmania Australia, Korea, Scotland, Germany and Japan) we have simplified it to make it even easier for you to access the amazing, life-transforming nutrition in this time-tested breakfast. Along comes, Phil's Ultimate "Longevity Blend", Food with Benefits!!
Watch how to make this recipe:
Drink your way into a healthier 2013 with Phil's Ultimate Longevity Blend! It is so easy!!
- Just tear open the Longevity Blend foil pouch
- Grind for a few seconds in your coffee grinder
- Add the ground up Longevity Blend to your favorite concoction of fruits in the blender
- Whiz it up and voila, a drink to thrive on!
Drink it all at once or sip it throughout the day.
Here is a sample recipe that serves one person:
Step 1: Tear open the single serve "B" Brilliant version of the Longevity Blend, grind, set aside. *For a Double Serving use the "A" Amazing version*
Step 2: Pour 1 cup alkaline water or almond milk into your blender. (You can use green stevia water as another option)
Step 3:
- Add 1/2-1 banana
- 1 small apple, core removed if you prefer
- 1 orange, peeled
- 1/2-1 cup fresh pineapple chunks
- 1 handful of red grapes
- a 1/2 inch chunk of fresh ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Step 4: Add ground up Longevity Blend mix to the blender, and blend until smooth. Now you are done!
Options: Mix and match your favorite fruits to add variety once in awhile. Try to avoid blueberries, cranberries and plums until you get your body pH up to 7.4 or more consistently.
Carrot Salad
This is one of the easiest salads to make and so refreshing. Served as a side salad in this picture alongside Coconut Curried Broccoli:
- Grate 6 CARROTS into a bowl
- Add the juice of 1 small fresh LEMON
- Sprinkle 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of GARLIC POWDER over the mix
- Add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of PINK HIMALAYAN SALT
Toss until thoroughly mixed. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds, you will be amazed at how a few sesame seeds add so much flavour.
Health to you!
Phil and Cindy Levington

Acid Reflux Remedy
Do You Suffer From Acid Reflux?
Acid reflux or heartburn is caused when digestive acids flow up from the stomach and into the esophagus.
Over the counter or prescribed medications may lead to other problems, here are 3 Acid Reflux remedy Options:
Option 1 - The Neutralizing Effect
The simplest of all three is to start immediately facilitating the "neutralizing effect" and to counteract what the stores of acid have been producing in our bodies (fat & disease), and to help our bodies metabolize and digest the foods we eat.
Option 2 - The Schmunkie
The second suggestion is also quite easy to add to your current lifestyle. Make yourself a nutrient rich "Schmunkie."
Watch how to make this recipe:
This Schmunkie will infuse your body with much needed nutrient rich fuel, loaded with natural minerals and vitamins that your body will use to usher out the previously stored acids, and empower your cells to start the clean up job that can result in robust health.
The "Schmunkie" recipe is extremely flexible.
The basic rule is:
-
40% Organic green plant food (i.e. Suede Hills Alfalfa Powder, Kale, Spinach, Romaine, the best is a rotation combination)
-
60% Organic fruit
Option 3 - Totally Change Your Diet
The third suggestion is the most dramatic, yet highly effective, and that is to totally change your diet!
The typical Western diet tends to be high in acid forming foods such as: Animal Protein, Dairy Products, Grains, Coffee, Alcohol, Artificial Sweeteners, Highly Processed and Fatty Foods.
The ideal diet to balance your pH would be high in alkaline forming foods such as Fresh Fruit, Raw Green Leafy Vegetables and other Fresh Raw Veggies to achieve optimum results.
